Join us in inaugurating our new Masters Series of enameling workshops.

Ruth Ball, a recognized enamel master from the UK, will teach traditional enameling techniques on fine silver using many contemporary approaches. The workshop will be held at Silvera Jewelry School in Berkeley, CA. Here is only some of what will be taught:

  • Hand texture your metal with engraving tools to give a surface that highlights the overlay of transparent enamel.
  • With a fresh approach to the application of cloisonné wire you will learn how to apply fine cloisonné wires to add a drawn approach to your designs, using mark-making and linear drawing exercises as inspiration.
  • Additionally you will discover how to embellish your pieces with gold & silver foils and painting enamel to add value and nuance to your work.
  • Although the focus of this workshop is working on silver you can opt to work on copper with opaque colors.

You will make a series of samples which you will be able to incorporate into your own ideas for further development. Settings and the fabrication of designs will be discussed but the emphasis will be on producing enamel pieces for later setting.

The class is an intermediate level, but flexible for beginners. Some previous experience of enameling or jewelry making is beneficial. The course would also be of interest to anyone with a background in art & design. Beginners will be taken through step by step examples and more advanced learners will have opportunity to develop new ideas, experiment and refine processes. There will be a range of examples on display and the focus of the workshop will be about encouraging individual approaches to making.

Ruth Ball is skilled in a wide range of enamel methods. She is the author of the Enamelling Handbook Guide, 2011. Her work is exhibited nationally & internationally. Visit her website www.ruthballenameldesign.com
